MDI Tomorrow
Youth Working Group

The MDI Tomorrow Youth Working Group is committed to supporting our young residents, working to involve a youth perspective in MDI Tomorrow and working with youth to identify, coordinate, develop, and assess programs to keep them safe and healthy -- to meet as many needs for as many children and youth as we possibly can.

Participants in this working group have identified three main areas of concern:

  • risky behaviors (including unsafe driving, experimentation with drugs and alcohol, and unprotected sex)
  • obesity, exercise and diet
  • parental, community, and school support

Approaches to promote healthy early years include: safe hang-outs; intramural sports; after-school programs, especially for younger kids; year-round public transportation, more and better sidewalks and bike lanes.

But most importantly, this group feels strongly that a sustainable community structure is needed to identify the assets in and available to our youth and build upon them. All segments of the community need to be involved: youth themselves, parents, schools, other service providers. To this end, the group is working toward forming a Communities for Children program on MDI.
