MDI TOMORROW YOUTH COMMITTEE

August 30, 2002

Marty distributed an agenda of items carried over from the last meeting:

Action Items:

Ann provided the youth committee with data on traffic incidents on MDI. The data shows the majority of accidents are caused by youth ages 17-18. The time of day when most of these accidents occur is between 1-6pm. This information will be included on the State of the Island report.

Ann and Peg will be working on a template to chart the obesity rate of children in all 7 island schools (and Trenton & Lamoine?). This template will chart height, weight, age, gender and be coded by town so that we may keep track of trends over the next 5 years. Jenny will help distribute this to the school nurses. Jenny also provided a national obesity survey with which to compare our findings.

Jenny and Marty are working on gathering data indicators and possible survey questions to assess the physical fitness of island youth.

All data will be given to Ann so that she could put it into the outline and see what information is still needed. Everyone agreed to e-mail Ann his/her assigned data/indicators/survey questions for inclusion in the YOUTH section of the State of the Island report

The report is due September 20, 2002.

Communities for Children Kitchen Cabinet Organizational Meeting Sept 19:

Some school officials have expressed hesitation over the forming of the Communities for Children Kitchen Cabinet. There are concerns it may overlap what is already in place or possibly overextend human resources. These concerns/issues will be discussed at the September 19th meeting.

Ron Beard will be facilitating the meeting on the 19th. Marty will contact him before that date to plan the meeting agenda.

Marty and/or Susan will approach John Buell about writing the op ed.
