    Community Design & Land Use
July 30, 2003 Notes

The next CD & LU meeting is Monday, 8/18, 8:30 a.m. at Acadia National Park Headquarters conference room, Rte. 233/Eagle Lake Road.

Present: Bill Cohen, Carla Haskell, John Kelly, Ted Koffman, Marla Major, Sydney Rockefeller, Julia Schloss, Zack Steele

Community design & land use roadshows

We discussed gathering images to illustrate the roadshow:

  • historic images -- invite historical societies to help develop this section)
  • future trends (what might MDI look like if it continues on current development course)
  • models of communities/developments/architecture to help residents identify the types of communities they’d prefer to see develop.

But as a first step, thought a charrette with landscape designers, planners, and architects would be most useful to help develop the roadshow concept, and to identify and move ideas forward for other options to promote good community design and land use.

Next steps:

  • Carla volunteered to gather images/models of development
  • Meet with architects, landscape designers about work done, models created/collected identifying design standards, discuss charrette
  • Consider working on a model project developer
  • Adapt COA student "suitability for development" presentation to apply it to a specific landowner parcel, for demonstration
  • Zack will make a list of models/projects done by COA students to date, which might be of use for this group
  • Zack will check on warrant committee deadlines, for our action planning

Discussed two goals that have recently failed – cluster development and mixed use – Mansell Mt. and project proposal on Holland Ave./Cottage St. Why did they fail, how did they address goals well or not so well. Education of public on goals is important, but was that all that was missing in these projects?

Also, we need to be in agreement on terms – e.g., what do we mean by "cluster"?

Another education tool discussed (in addition to roadshow) was Land Use 101:

  • a series of topics in local newspapers on "smart growth" (again, need to define) goals
  • a booklet or handout for people to take away from meetings, or to request.

The group was invited to bring along other people to help work out how to develop the project.
