MDI Tomorrow's A key to long-term sustainability and economic health for our island is ensuring that the people who work here can also afford to live here. MDI Tomorrow's Community Housing initiative is committed to increasing the rental and home-buying options for those who comprise the year-round, core community workforce on the island - teachers, nurses, police, firefighters, park rangers, trades people, employees of local businesses and non-profits - all those who provide the essential services that make our communities vibrant places to live. MDI Tomorrow is working with the Island Housing Trust on a housing initiative committed to increasing the rental and home-buying options for people and families who comprise the year-round, core community workforce on the island - specifically, the teachers, nurses, police and firefighters, town employees, tradespeople, Coast Guard personnel, employees of local businesses and nonprofits large and small, and others who work on Mount Desert Island. Families in this range (with annual incomes from $37,600-$56,400) for homebuyers and $25,000 for renters) have difficulty affording current island housing prices, but are not eligible for federal subsidies. The Housing Issue Group and The Island Housing Trust both recognize that these targets exclude some hardworking MDI residents whose income and circumstances prevent them from obtaining current housing options. We will continue to explore ways to meet the housing needs of these neighbors.
