CONFERENCE NOTICES:

MDI Tomorrow: Make It Happen or Watch It Happen

Saturday, November 16, 2002, 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Atlantic Oakes Conference Center

Keynote Speaker: Mark Lapping will speak about rural communities, and the unique opportunities (and inherent obligations) they have to shape their future. Mark Lapping is Professor of Public Policy and Planning at the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine. Lapping is the author of a number of books including "The Small Town Planning Handbook" and "A Long, Deep Furrow: Three Centuries of Farming in New England," and "Rural Planning and Development."  Most recently, he has served as consultant to the President's Council on Sustainability, chaired the Agricultural Commission of Maine's 'strategic planning' advisory committee, served as a core faculty member of the Maine Smart Growth Institute, and works on the Agricultural Land Preservation Working Group of the Maine Department of Agriculture.  He brings extraordinary experience and creative thinking to the topics facing MDI's rural communities.

Draft State of the Island Reports will be shared and discussed in small groups. There will be plenty of opportunity to share thoughts.

We are planning a "reaction panel" - one leader from each town will be asked to attend the conference and share: what they heard that surprised or impressed them, what they'll take away from the day, and what if anything has inspired them.

And, read some of the quotes from the MDI Tomorrow survey (more than 200 responses).
