MDI Tomorrow Conference - November 16, 2002

Hosted by the Atlantic Oakes

8:00 Registration/pick up materials/coffee

8:30 Welcome and Frame the Day, with preview of vision statement

8:45 Keynote Speaker: Mark Lapping, University of Southern Maine
What can rural communities like those on MDI do to manage the future and thrive? How can communities respond to complex and inter-related issues? How can they use their special features and resources to best advantage without ruining the very things that make the community special? (inc. 10 minutes for Q & A)

9:15 Health break sponsored by Healthy Acadia

9:30-10:15 Survey Results and State of the Island Reports from the working groups

10:30 Discussion Groups (not issue specific/ strive for maximum diversity in each discussion group, facilitators and recorders at each table)
Each discussion group will:
* Introduce themselves and reflect on what meaning they make from the survey results and the State of the Island.... What is their personal stake in the issues? Facilitators will then introduce the draft vision statement (this is a draft of what we prefer the future to be... we aren't confident it is very good yet? Please help us make it better). Each group generates ideas for "action" that will help MDI achieve this "preferred future". These ideas are transferred to 3x5 cards (maybe larger/ one idea per card). Each group decides on which of their ideas will be presented to full conference in afternoon.

12:00 Lunch - option to bring lunch back to their discussion groups and continue over lunch. The Steering Committee reviews 3x5 cards and organizes for the afternoon presentation. If artists sketch the Vision of MDI Tomorrow in the morning session, display artwork.

12:45 Good Ideas for Moving Forward: Steering Committee (?) presents a sampling from the note cards generated in morning discussion groups

1:15 "Our Community Leaders Respond" Reaction panel, one official from each town responds to the work of the day... what have they "heard" that surprises them, impresses them? What are they taking away from the day? Are they inspired to act? (Question and Answer).
